The Biosphere Reserve Lake Vänern Archipelago with Kinnekulle is Sweden’s second biosphere reserve, classified by UNESCO in June 2010. It covers an area from Sjötorp and Torsö in the north, to Kållandsö in the west. Welcome to Lake Vänern Archipelago with Kinnekulle- a future ecotourism destination!

An ecotourism destination is not built in a day. The first step is to set up an ecotourism network with the shared aim to offer visitors sustainable experiences in the future ecotourism destination.

Lake Vänern
Lake Vänern, our huge inland sea, is an amazing resource, which offers wonderful swimming, unspoilt natural harbours, and exciting fishing. Lake Vänern has Europe’s largest archipelago in a freshwater lake and is utterly unique. All in all, there are almost 22,000 islands, rocks and islets.
Kinnekulle
Visitors to the Kinnekulle Area don’t have far to travel between the different sights. The area offers viewing towers, waterfalls, medieval churches, rock carvings, abbeys, limestone quarries, arts & crafts centres, campsites, beaches, and much more.
Activities close to nature
Biosphere visitors can enjoy the amazing opportunities for walking, cycling, paddling, horseback riding and more in this beautiful natural landscape. Suggestions for nature-based activities are found here.
