Ingrid Bergman

Hollywood legend Ingrid Bergman and her family were frequent visitors to Fjällbacka between 1958 and 1982. The actress and her family spent many summers on their island Dannholmen, west of Fjällbacka.

Legendary Hollywood actress Ingrid Bergman was born in 1915 in Stockholm and died in London in 1982. She won two Oscars for best actress and one for best supporting actress, as well as multiple Academy Award nominations and other film and theatre awards. Her most famous films include 'Casablanca' and 'Notorious' and in her day she was reckoned to be one of the most beautiful women in the world and one of the finest actors.

Most of Ingrid Bergman's ashes were scattered at a very simple and touching ceremony on the north side of Dannholmen. Here is the New York Times obituary in her honour.

Dannholmen island in the outer part of the Fjällbacka archipelago to the west of the town is about as far from the razzamatazz of Hollywood as you can come. Ingrid Bergman and husband Lars Schmidt visited Dannholmen in the spring of 1958 and fell in love with the place. With their family they spent the summer months here between 1958 and 1982 and their house is still there. To this day the family own a small green cabin on the island

Ingrid Bergman was a frequent visitor to Fjällbacka for shopping trips and restaurant and café visits.'

According to Lasse Lundberg, a close friend of the family, she was well-liked by the townspeople because she was unpretentious and down-to-earth. Over dinner with Lundberg in late summer 1982, Bergman mentioned that she would like to 'do something' for Fjällbacka. That 'something' turned out to be Ingrid Bergman square.
