Welcome to Lysekil Municipality!

Throughout the ages, the residents of Lysekil have made their living from the sea. The fishing industry has played an huge part in the history and development of the city and municipality Lysekil.

Lysekil

The history of Lysekil as a spa resort began in 1846 when the first spa establishment was built. A few years later the doctor Carl Curman continued to develop the spa traditions in the city by building the park Havsbadet with both warmwater bathhouse and coldwater bathhouse, a restaurant and a big society house. From this era you can visit Havsbadsparken and the villas of Curmans.

Even if the biggest development started 1846 there has been settlement in Lysekil from the 1500´s century. Enjoy a walk in the old parts of Lysekil through "Gamlestan".

Today it lives approximately 15 000 people in Lysekil Muncipality, a number that increases a lot during the summer season.

Skaftö

Skaftö is the island you see opposite to Lysekils south harbour. In Skaftö you will find a few different picturesque old fishing villages. These settlements are uniqe for the west coast of Sweden. Small houses are climbing on the rocks all the way from the water and up. A bit higher you will probably find the newest and most expensive ones. The ocean is always present in those small traditional fishing villages. On Skaftö you´ll find Fiskebäckskil, Grundsund, Rågårdsvik and Stockevik. Many of the houses are decorated very nicely. Although the island is only 5 miles long and 3 miles wide, Skaftö offers several nature reserves, walking paths and cycling trails, marinas, an 18-hole golf course and Näreby pay-and-play golf course.

Stångenäset and Härnäset

The Stångenäset area, north of Lysekil is good example of a classic fjord landscape, and a living industrial and agricultural area. Many of the region's bigger industries and farms are found here. The area has a rich cultural heritage, with a number of ancient remains, like the Bronze Age rock carvings in Backa, Störreberg grave field from the later Iron Age, and the Vinbräcka Stone, also from the Iron Age
Right at the tip of Härnäset is the nature reserve Nävekärr, with Skioldenborg fishing community, which was founded during the big herring era of the 16th century. At Härnäset you'll also find Fågelviken, which used to be the centre of the local stonemason industry, working with the red Bohuslän granite. A cultural week with stonemason activities is held at Härnäset every year.
