Hyltenäskulle
Hyltenäskulle rises majestically out of the beautiful landscape between the Öresjöarna lakes and Tolken. From the summit of the hill, there is a fantastic vista over Mark’s dense forests and glittering waterways. Enjoy your picnic basket on the benches beside the stone balustrades from where the view is enchanting. The merchant George Seaton built a magnificent hunting lodge here in the early 1900s and on the top of the hill there is a pavilion with an exhibition of images of the hunting lodge. Along the foot of the hill there is a path just by the waterside that takes you all around the hill. In spring there are plenty of blue anemortes and wood anemones along the path that makes the walk even more enjoyable.
George Seaton - lord of the castle
The merchant George Seaton built his magnificent hunting lodge here in the early 1900s. The hunting lodge had all modern conveniences of that time and the life at the lodge was quite easy-going. But the glory days at the hunting lodge ended abruptly. 1923 the lodge was totaly destroyed by a fire and was never rebuilt.
The Nature Reserve
Since 1974, Hyltenäskulle has been designated a nature reserve. The reserve comprises the close to 100-metre high hill between the Västra (western) and Östra (eastern) Oressjöarna lakes. The hill is surrounded by sheer drops, overgrown with deciduous forest in which oak, hazel, birch and mountain ash predominate. Bilberry sprigs and sorrel are the most common ground plants but, in some places, dog’s mercury can be encountered and there are lots of blue anemones in the clumps of hazel. A pretty lime alley, planted in George Seaton’s time, leads into the nature reserve. Up on the plateau, there are some plants that were originally cultivated but that now grow wild, such as privet, types of spiraea, sycamore maple and chestnut.
The birdlife benefits from the leafy, steep vegetation. Small birds, such as the chaffinch, blackbird, icterine warbler, garden warbler and blackcap, can often be seen. Maintenance of the reserve aims to make the area as easily accessible and attractive as possible for visitors. Hiking tracks have been created around the hill and also from the crest of the hill northwards down to the sound.
The road up to the hill is asphalt-paved but curvy an quite narrow. Busses up to 12 Metres can drive up the hill. The reserve is suitable for the disabled and there are toilets and bins.
