- One of Europe's best museums!
Some people will associate museums with old dusty collections and conservative curators. The Mölndal Museum is far from this idea. History is here mixed with modern technology, and the visitor has access to all the archives.
Beside the permanent exhibitions “Lindome Furniture” and “The Open Storage”, we have various temporary exhibitions.
After a visit among the exhibits, you may take a break in the cafeteria on the veranda, above the rush of the falls, or at the kitchen table in our construction of a 1930's environment. If you would like to purchase a memory, there are many choices from a variety of products in our boutique, especially manufactured for the museum.
Lindome Furniture
Furniture was made in the village Lindome already in the 17th century. When the surrounding forests had been ravaged, timber was available from other places via the Lindome Stream. In the 1930's the manufacturing of furniture increased as import of chairs was banned.
As industrialization gradually developed, the manufacturers of furniture found it more and more difficult to compete with their own handcraft. Today this handcraft remains more like a hobby activity.
In the museum there is a permanent exhibition of chairs from Lindome. In the collections you find Gustavian chairs ('gustavianska stolar') and the well-known Gothenburg chair ('Göteborgsstolen').
The Open Storage
Have you ever reflected on what may exist in the hidden corners of museums? In our museum all our archives can be seen. There are about 10.000 items collected around themes like 'Status and Pride', 'Rewards by Efforts', 'Joy and Sorrow' and 'Food on the Table'. In exhibited data banks, you may research among items and photographs. You may also write down your own memories and reflections, as well as participate in the memoirs of other people. An opportune moment for the curious minded!
Maybe it is not so strange that the museum has been rewarded with many distinctions, among them the 'European Museum of the Year Award 2005'.
