Lobster – Black Gold of the Sea

On the Bohuslän coast, it has been as natural to fish for lobster as it has been for people in other parts of the country to hunt elk. The lobster season starts on the first Monday after September 20. The west coast will transform into a huge seafood party, from the tiniest boatshed to the fanciest gourmet restaurant. The seas will also be full – of boats trying to secure the best fishing sports.

At numerous locations around the region there will be lobster safaris, followed of course by lobster dinners. Keeping to the lobster theme, the brewery Grebbestadsbryggeri will release a special lobster beer, available at restaurants in Bohuslän and Göteborg. And to disseminate knowledge about lobsters, to maintain the stocks and ensure their quality, the Lobster Academy was established in 1996 in Hunnebostrand.

The establishment of the Lobster Academy has resulted in a unique collection of knowledge, passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation, about how to catch lobster, about equipment, conditions on the sea floor, methods of preparation, everything to do with lobster. Many of the hotels along the coast allow you to come along on a lobster safari, where you accompany an expert lobster catcher out to sea, to experience a magnificent autumn day in the Bohuslän archipelago. For half a day you fish for lobster – you get to pull up the lobster pots and set them again, you get to tie the lobster’s claws as well as listen to your host’s stories about lobster and life at sea. Come evening, the catch will be cooked and enjoyed in a cosy atmosphere.
