Fornbyn - Open air museum in Skara
Right next to the museum proper lies Västergötland's own Skansen, namely Fornbyn or The Ancient Village. Old houses from the entire province have been moved here in order to provide a picture of the old farming society. Included here are residences, a mission chapel, a church and a country store. Summertime finds pigs, sheep and chickens. And as a place to walk, the Fornbyn is a hit with all ages. Should you find yourself in Skara at midsummer don't miss the traditional celebration at the Fornbyn.
In the village shop, which is only open at larger events, you can buy boiled sweets in cones and ice cream. At the farms in the Ancient Village old-fashioned flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables are grown. A permanent exhibition about the care of buildings is housed in the barn from Karleby.
During the summer the Ancient Village is teeming with life with many audience events and activities, like celebrating Sweden’s National Day, dancing around the maypole at Midsummer, folk musician rallies, and on Wednesdays in June and July there is community singing in the Ancient Village. In the autumn, Skara’s seven-year olds come for a visit and experience what life was like in the 19th century in the Händene Cottage.
