In Skövde you will find the first real culture centre in Sweden, it opened 1964 and was the first real cultural centre in Sweden. The Centre houses an art museum, art gallery, theatre, library, lecture and cinema, cafeteria, restaurant, dancing hall and meeting rooms. It is a complete cultural centre that ranks among the best in the country.
At the Art museum you can see a large collection of Swedish 20th century art, and from time to time smaller exhibitions.

In the heart of the town is an attractive little cottage known as Helénsstugan, which is the oldest residential building in the town and one of the few buildings dating back to the time before the great fire of 1759. More about the history of Skövde you can see and learn about at Skövde city museum. There you will find the history from the Middle Ages to present day.

You will also see a copy of the Timboholm treasure, 7,1 kg of pure gold and the Nordic region's largest gold treasure, found just outside Skövde in 1904.

Not far from Skövde we have the second largest ship tumulus in Sweden called Askeberga skeppssättning. It is probably built during the Iron Age (400-500 AD). It is 53 metres long and is made up of 24 gigantic stone blocks.

Close to Askeberga you will find Vaholms brohus, it is a covered bridge and it looks as through it has been taken straight out of the film "The Bridges of Madison County" with Clint Eastwood and Maryl Streep. It is brobably the only covered bridge in Sweden, built in the 18th century.

The area around Skövde also has a whole range of beautiful churches that are well worth visiting. An excellent example is Forsby church, which is Sweden's oldest dated church. Another is St Lukas church at the edge of Billingen.
