Göta river and Trollhätte canal

One of West-Sweden’s seven wonders consists of the locks in Trollhättan. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the area each year to see how boats make their way through the locks and not in the least to see 300,000 litres of water being released into the river.

The Trollhättan falls

The Trollhättan Falls are unique. They will treat you to a spectacular experience, as 300,000 litres of water per second rush by. The best place to enjoy this view is from the Oskarsbro (Oskar’s bridge). A touch of magic is added at night, when there is special lighting(during the Waterfall festival and new years eve).

The locks in Trollhättan

The locks area

The three separate lock terraces create the idyllic and green park area of Gamle Dal’n. Here one finds lock segments from 1800, 1844, and 1916. The four locks that are in use today were inaugurated in 1916, and have a difference in level of 32 m. Apart from the locks, you’ll find a pleasant café (open during summer),
guest harbours and the Canal Museum. Boat tours are available and startes from here. The locks are open all year around.

Maritime traffic through Göta Älv and Trollhätte Canal will be stopped August 26-September 19, 2011. The reason for the stop is that the Trollhätte Canal locks must be repaired and maintained.

Boat trips

Experience Trollhättan from its most beautiful side, the lakeside, and see the city in a different way. In summertime, the shipping company Strömkarlen provides boat trips on the Götariver and the Trollhätte-Canal. A boat trip takes about 2,5 to 3 hours, and it will take you through the locks of Trollhättan or Vänersborg. Embarking and disembarking takes place at the upper lock or at the quay in the centre of Trollhättan.
