Frighteningly beautiful - visit Läckberg's Fjällbacka

Scandinavia's crime writers are enjoying success across the world, with Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander Mysteries being adapted into a high profile BBC One Drama, and Camilla Läckberg’s novels earning a growing following.

Fjällbacka, on the Swedish west coast, north of Gothenburg, is not only a fishing community dating back to the 1600s, but also the setting of the best-selling author Camilla Läckberg's novels, which have been successful all over Europe. Läckberg grew up in Fjällbacka, and this is where her detective stories play out. The Ice Princess, the first in the series about Inspector Patrik Hedberg and the writer Erika, has now been translated into Italian by the publishing house Marsilio, which has also published the popular Millennium-trilogy by the Swedish author Stieg Larsson. In Läckberg's books, the holiday destination Fjällbacka, on the surface a quiet and pretty fishing village, is transformed into a place of intrigue, mystery and murder.

During a stay in Fjällbacka, visitors can not only satisfy their curiosity about Swedish detective stories but take the opportunity to experience an awe-inspiring natural landscape, and enjoy fresh, tasty shellfish. Fjällbacka has long been a popular visitor destination among Swedes with its cobbled streets, red boathouses, Vetterberget mountain from which there is a wonderful view over the sea and the nearby islands, the unique natural landscape, and its closeness to the islands in the Bohuslän archipelago.

Apart from walks around the village, you can also enjoy a boat trip through the archipelago, a visit to Kosterhavet Marine National Park or the rocky islands of Väderöarna in the outer archipelago, where you can spend the night at the old pilot station. A seal safari is a must for anyone who is interested in nature, and there are plenty of different fishing trips and kayaking tours on offer. Golfers have two courses to choose from, or why not just go for a walk through the unique natural landscape that surrounds Fjällbacka? Not far from Fjällbacka is a UNESCO Heritage Site, the rock carvings in Tanum, with an interesting museum. Along the coast are numerous other picturesque fishing villages waiting to be explored.

Fjällbacka's restaurants offer glorious shellfish, said to be among the best in the world – the cold water makes them extra flavoursome! Restaurant Bryggan is one of the best-known restaurants in the village, with a popular outdoor seating area in the summer. A charming hotel worth a mention is Stora Hotellet dating from 1834, once upon a time owned by two sea captains, something which has given the hotel much of its character: the furniture, the unusual detailing, the colours and the different styles come from all corners of the world!
