Sailing spectacular – some of the world’s best sailing competitions

If you prefer, leave exercise to the professionals this summer by witnessing some of the world’s best sailing competitions, including the Stena Match Cup (4-10 July), where visitors gather on the cliffs and quaysides of Marstrand to follow these gripping races which attract competitors from the Olympics; Lysekil Women’s Match (1-6 August), the world’s biggest match racing competition for women  and Around Tjörn (20 August), a yacht race circling the pretty island of Tjörn.

Stena Match Cup, Marstrand, 4-10 July.

Stena Match Cup attracts some of the best male and female match racing sailors in the world. The competition, which is organised by The Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, offers dramatic racing close to the shore, and a party atmosphere on the cliffs.

Lysekil Womens Match

Lysekil Women's Match, Lysekil, 1-6 August

Women's match racing will be introduced as an Olympic event at the Olympic Games in London 2012, and among sailors, Lysekil Women's Match is considered to be the best match racing event in the world. Lysekil is the perfect setting for this competition, with the race course very close to the cliffs, and within easy view of the many restaurants.

Cayfish party

Tjörn Runt, Stenungsund, 20 August

The idea of a sailing race around the island of Tjörn was born in 1963, at a crayfish party. At the time, no-one could imagine how successful it would become, with up to 1,000 yachts and a crowd of almost 30,000 spectators. Tjörn Runt attracts both professional sailors and amateurs, and anything from large 70-foot yachts to small sailing boats with a crew of two.
