Spas by the sea

A naturally relaxing, scenic and wholesome environment, the west coast of Sweden lends itself easily to wellbeing experiences. The coastal area of Bohuslän contains an archipelago of some 8,000 idyllic islands dotted between Gothenburg and the border with Norway, and a good number of spas too.

Here you can take your wellness to another level through a range of health clubs, spas and spa hotels. Try treatments inspired by the area such as hot saltwater baths overlooking the sea at sunset, feel what seaweed can do for you and dine upon West Sweden's renowned and healthy seafood cuisine.

Take a look at some of the best spas:

Light, water, champagne and oysters on Orust

HavSbadSpa is a new spa at Nösund Värdshus, an old spa resort on Orust Island. Built between the cliffs beside the sea, this airy spa offers sun and light therapy which is good for the circulation as well as giving the skin some colour. Salt water from the sea is heated enabling guests to enjoy an invigorating saltwater bath with wonderful views at sunset. And to top it off, champagne and oysters can be served and enjoyed from floating trays from the pool.

A taste and touch of the sea at new hotel in the archipelago

Marstrands Havshotell (Marstrands Sea Hotel) is located on Koön, opposite side of the island of Marstrand. The Spa is offering a scenic getaway beside the water just 50 minutes from Gothenburg.

The 98-room hotel includes a spa offering traditional treatments from the Bohuslän coast, incorporating the likes of seaweed, salts and hot baths; two restaurants, an outdoor terrace with seating for 150 people and fine views to sea and across the island. A lively island in summer with plenty of yachts and boats around it, off-season you'll have the place to yourself. Koön can be reached by car over a bridge connecting it to the mainland.

Stenungsbaden Yacht Club

A flavour of East Coast America in West Coast Sweden

Bluewater Sports & Health Club, part of Stenungsbaden Yacht Club, is a place to socialise and unwind with a glass of wine or a beer as well as to be pampered by spa treatments and make use of the professional exercise facilities. Located on Stenungsön Island, cut off from the mainland by a narrow water channel, this high-quality health club, and the renovated Yacht Club, exude a laid-back luxury of the American East Coast. Stenungsbaden Yacht Club is a member of Sweden's Spa Hotels.

Spa treatment in a nature reserve

The design-led Vann Spa Hotel overlooks Gullmar Fjord and is set within a nature reserve near Lysekil, an hour from Gothenburg. This stylish retreat underwent a complete makeover under the direction of architect Gert Wingårdh (designer of the Swedish Embassy in Washington DC) to open as a new creation in 2009.

With 151 double rooms and five suites, it features a modern restaurant and a six-pool spa. These include separate hot 42 °C and cold 10 °C pools, plus forest and flower pools. The property has a clear west coast profile, which includes everything from the use of local granite to the colours of the interior. Everything at Vann centres around water, with Gullmar Fjord outside and 1,000 sqm of spa on the inside, and 'Vann' itself is simply the way the Swedish word for water is pronounced in Bohuslän. The hotel also has a restaurant and its own 300m stretch of beach.

A Spa overlooking Sweden's first and only marine national park
