Herring Weekend in Bohuslän

The Herring Weekend takes place on Sweden’s west coast (2-3 June 2012), followed by The Herring Day on Sweden’s National Day (6 June). A Herring extravaganza takes place during this time.

Along the entire west coast - from Strömstad in the north, to Öckerö in the south, local history associations will be open to inform visitors about the exciting history of herring. There will be guided walks, talks and the restaurants will offer special herring menus.

Why do Swedes celebrate the herring? The herring has everything. It is nutritious, it is tasty and it can be varied endlessly. It also lends a silver shimmer to the entire history of the west coast. Few things have influenced the history and landscape of the west coast as much as the herring. The west coast's barren cliffs were caused by all the vegetation being cut down to provide fuel for the train-oil factories. Places to celebrate the Herring Weekend include Klädesholmen, Marstrand and Lysekil.
