Lobster season

The much-anticipated lobster season starts on the first Monday after the 20th of September each year, falling on the 23th in 2013, and runs until the end of April. This is a period when fishermen and locals alike seek the 'Black Gold' from the depths of the west coast's deep blue waters. In these parts, lobster grows slowly in the cold salty water giving it a strong taste.

Lobster

For the full experience take part in a lobster safari in which you typically travel out to sea with an experienced skipper to help haul up the lobster pots and discover the precious catch, before returning to shore to help prepare and then savour your self-sought supper. Lobster safaris are available at many places along the Bohuslän coast, each with their own slightly different approach.

A safari departing from Sea Lodge in the well-known fishing village of Smögen is followed by a cold glass of beer in a hot tub. Or set off on a lobster safari from the peaceful car-free South Koster island, set in Sweden's first marine national park, Kosterhavet. Stay at Sydkoster Hotel Ekenäs, where guests can take part in a three-day lobster experience, including an exquisite four-course lobster meal and cycle tour of the island. Havshotellet Strandflickorna at Lysekil, built in 1904, is a charming hotel with its own pier and 15 beautifully decorated rooms. Safaris from Everts Sjöbod at Grebbestad set out aboard the characterful wooden vessel MS Tuffa and include seaweed crisp bread and horseradish cheese snacks with warm coffee.
