Gothenburg and West Sweden expect new easyJet airline route to further boost tourism

The cultural attractions, gastronomy and city archipelago of Gothenburg have become even easier to get to for many people in the Southeast with the opening of a new easyJet Gatwick to Gothenburg route.

The low-fare carrier launches daily flights to Sweden’s west coast on 6 September.

“Gothenburg’s popularity as a city break destination, and the opportunity to combine this with time in the West Sweden region, has grown considerably in recent years and there is no doubt the introduction of low-fare flights, first through Ryanair, has played a part in this,” comments Ann-Charlotte Carlsson, of the West Sweden Tourist Board.

“EasyJet’s new route from Gatwick makes Gothenburg even more accessible for many people in London and the Southeast and we expect visitor numbers to receive a boost. Starting in September, it comes just in time for visitors to give lobster safaris a try when the season starts this autumn.”

Gothenburg, Sweden’s second city, is an up and coming city break destination offering cultural attractions including Gothenburg Opera House, Röhsska Museum of design and fashion, the Gothenburg Culture Festival (10-15 August) and Way Out West Music Festival (12-14 August). The city is gaining a reputation as one of northern Europe’s gourmet capitals, boasting five Michelin-starred restaurants, and is particularly noted for its seafood. Popular attractions include Liseberg, Scandinavia’s biggest amusement park, Paddan boat canal rides and the new 60m Wheel of Gothenburg. A clean, green city with prized parks and gardens, Gothenburg offers eco-friendly accredited hotels and the world’s largest fleet of bio-gas buses.

The gateway to West Sweden, Gothenburg is a convenient base from which to branch out and explore the region’s pristine Bohuslan coast, sea kayak amongst its idyllic islands, sample its restaurants, try seafood safaris and visit Kosterhavet marine national park. Visit the forests and lakes of the Dalsland wilderness area for outdoor activities galore and tour Västergötland for historic manor houses and castles.
