For the past decade, The Nordic Watercolour Museum in Skärhamn has been a Mecca for watercolour enthusiasts in Scandinavia. The red and glazed building in the South Harbour combines permanent works and temporary exhibitions, attracting both a lot of attention and visitors from far afield. People of very diverse backgrounds, from Elsa Beskow and Anders Zorn to Andrew Wyeth and Lars Lerin, have been acknowledged for their watercolours. And Restaurant Vatten is the perfect addition to the experiences in the exhibition halls, serving up exquisite food or coffee.
Watercolour is often considered to be a fairly basic technique. However, many artists claim that watercolour painting is one of the most difficult things you can do with a paintbrush. Every year, around 150,000 art lovers come here to study and to take pleasure in the techniques of the masters.
In 2010, the Nordic Watercolour Museum was elected Museum of the Year and it’s easy to see why.
