Search for sights
In West Sweden you’ll find sights that are all worth a trip. A unique orchid in the Gothenburg Botanical Gardens is just as fascinating as the rock carvings in Tanum. A boat ride on the Göta Canal is sheer delight, as are the buildings in the fishing village.
Göta Canal activities
A blue ribbon of water including the Göta Canal links Gothenburg with Stockholm offering opportunities to cruise and canoe along it, cycle and follow walking trails beside it, and stop off at a range of comfortable and unusual accommodation en route.
Dalslands Canal
Travel by boat at your own speed along the Dalslands Canal, through the wilderness of Dalsland, to cross rapids via aqueduct, marvel at the scenery and drop in on sights along the way.
Museums and galleries
There’s plenty of food for thought when it comes to museums – ponder the pictures at the Nordic Watercolour Museum on Skärhamn, discover a Bronze Age world at the Vitlycke Museum and Rock Carvings, at Tanumshede, and get interactive at Gothenburg’s Universeum discovery centre.
Rock carvings at Tanum
The rock carvings in Tanumshede are on the Unesco´s list of World Heritages. These magnificent pictures, some carved 3000 years ago, bear a unique testimony to the Bronze Age world.
Gunnebo House and Garden
Gunnebo House is one of Sweden’s most beautiful neoclassical estates, prettily placed between two lakes in Mölndal, south of Gothenburg. Enjoy a colourful guided tour, explore the formal garden, landscaped park and kitchen garden, and stop for a bite in the coffee house and restaurant in the former servants’ quarters.
Läckö Castle
The Baroque, fairytale-like Läckö Castle, with its towers reflected in Lake Vänern, is one of the most impressive sights in West Sweden. Open from the start of May to the end of September, it dates back to 1298 and provides a fascinating window on Sweden’s past.
Carlsten’s Fortress
The island of Marstrand near Gothenburg is known for its boating culture, its history as a Royal playground and for Carlsten’s Fortress, perched on a hill. Carlsten’s colourful past dates back to 1658 when the king ordered its construction, which took 202 years. Today the fortress offers guided tours and even the chance to stay the night in its own hotel.
