Stone cist on Björkön island
On Björkön in Svanefjorden, a collapsed stone cist which was as good as completely overgrown was discovered in the 1930s. This proved that Stone Age Man had lived on the island. In the south part of the cist, which is around 3500 years old, archaeologists found a number of sherds, an arrowhead made of slate and an arrowhead made of flint, as well as a compact store of crushed clay pots. The fragments from these pots were beautifully ornamented. This was very interesting and reminiscent of the pots found in chambered burial mounds. All in all, 1150 sherds were found in the grave. A variety of flint tools were also found in it. There were scrapers, arrowheads, knives and flint chips, all of which had come from a long way away. Tools and jewellery made of fine slate were also found, and the grave also contained jewellery made of amber, which was very valuable in the Stone Age - a dear member of the family had been buried with it.
