Rock carvings at Dalbergså
These carvings can be seen on a rock which is still clear of the water, i.e. after the controlling of the Trollhättan falls. Prehistoric Man followed the waterways and found their way into the country along the rivers. It was natural for them to start off at Vänerstranden beach. They could not avoid seeing this picture, especially if it had been painted as well. The entire picture at Dalbergså follows a characteristic pattern of a central picture with an arch of smaller pictures. It shows a clear, deliberate picture. It would have been understood clearly by contemporary Man. All we can say is that it is probably both a land marker and an indicator of its time: it is understood that the people who lived here arrived some time before. This is one of the oldest rock carvings in southern Sweden. The elks, the large boats bearing elk heads and a few other boats can be compared with those shown in Alta, northern Norway, but also with carvings found in Egypt and dating back to before 3000 BC. It is thought that these carvings here date back to between 1500 and 500 BC. Text taken from Bengt Hemtun's website.
