The Culture centre was opened November 7, 1964 in connection with the city council's 100th anniversary and was the country's first cultural center.
The house was designed by the architect Hans-Erland Heineman of Skövde. The facade is brick covered with spinning surface, ie sawdust is burned in the mud, and the exterior has no straight angles. Figure Stones, specialized for the house, based on Norse and Egyptian characters. A recurring character is a sign of life. Bricks are manufactured at Mariesjö brickyard.
The Culture House is today City Theatre, Cinema / auditorium, a restaurant, a cafe, library, art museum and art gallery with exhibitions of mainly Swedish contemporary art.
The library contains Siri Dekerts relief - Mustard tree and the birds. On the square in front of the Culture centre you can see sculptures of Monument Yxman by Eric Grate and La Mano of Liss Eriksson. The latter was erected in 1986 as a tribute to Olof Palme.
