    Are you interested in archaeology and the Middle Ages? Or maybe you want to know more about navigation and industrial shipyard history? In that case Lödöse Museum is the right place for you! Lödöse was established in the mid 11th century, and gradually become one of the most important trading ports in medieval Sweden.

    Lödöse Museum is an archaeological museum, housing hundreds of thousands of artefacts. The museum hosts a varied programme of family friendly events.

    The museum is fully accessible for handicapped visitors. Audio guides are available.

    There is free parking and free entrance to the museum!

    Exhibitions

    The museum has three permanent exhibitions portraying how people lived during different times in history – “Medieval Lödöse”, “Images of our Ancestors” and “The Shipyard Historical Exhibition”. There is also a medieval herb garden.

    Every year the museum also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions.

    Café Alfhild

    All year round you can enjoy a snack or a light meal in the cosy museum café. Choose from a selection of hot drinks, and newly baked bread and cakes. In the summer you can enjoy your coffee in the outdoor area. The café has the same opening hours as the museum. Groups of 10 or more are advised to order lunch in advance.

    The Museum Shop

    The welcoming museum shop offers a wide variety of historical souvenirs – unique jewellery, handicraft, books and fair trade toys. The museum shop also has a wide range of herbal products, spices, and organic skin care products. There is always a selection of theme based products relating to current exhibitions. In the shop you will find a wide range of souvenirs catering for all budgets and tastes.

    The Herb Garden

    Lödöse Museum has a stunning medieval herb garden! The herb garden is a living exhibition where you can read about medicinal herbs and the mythology and magic associated with many herbs. The herb garden is an oasis for relaxation and for inspiration. On summer days you can drink your coffee among the fragrant flowers, watch the butterflies and listen to the bees. Every summer the herb garden displays a temporary exhibition on different themes and once a year hosts the Herbal Garden Day.

    Educational Activities and Playroom

    In the playroom “Källan” there are exciting things to do for all age groups. There is always material available where you can try your skills at a variety of historical handicraft. There are also many historical games, a medieval playhouse and medieval costumes to dress up in. In the reading area you can look through is a selection of interesting books and on fine summer days you can play historical games and sports outside.

    Events

    The programme of events at Lödöse Museum is widely varied. Yearly events include the Veteran Car Nostalgia Day, Archaeology Day, Numismatic Day, Shipyard Historical Day, The Herbal Garden day and Christmas Market. New events for 2011 are the Farmyard Market Day and the 18th Century Day.

    Conference at Lödöse Museum

    The auditorium at Lödöse Museum is available for conferences, meetings, concerts and lectures. The auditorium can be furnished and arranged to meet different requirements and there is a complete set of modern conference equipment.

    We welcome groups of any size.
    Combine your conference with a guided tour of one of our exciting exhibitions, or a tour of the medieval herb garden.
    Lunch and other refreshments are available.
    Information At Lödöse museum there are several exhibitions, a well stocked museum shop, café, and a medieval herb garden.

    The museum is also designed to accommodate wheelchair bound visitors and those with impaired vision. Parking is free for all visitors,

    The texts in the “Medieval Lödöse” exhibition hall are in Swedish, English, German and French.

    Directions To reach Lödöse by car: Drive on the E45 highway, the museum is located 40 kilometres north of Gothenburg

    By bus: Take the bus number 600 from Gothenburg or from Vänersborg/ Trollhättan. The bus stops outside the museum.

    By boat: Sail along the Göta River, 40 kilometres north of Gothenburg.
