Torrskog church
This church is beautifully situated by the lake Lelång 20 kilometres north of Bengtsfors. The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Initially there was an old wooden church at Tornäsets cult place. It was built around 1700 and was covered in shingle and coated with tar. The construction of a church meant great sacrifices for the villagers who worked all day with the construction. Limestone was carried on the back all the way from Halden in Norway. 1790 the church got a new baroque pulpit, made by the sculptor Hugo Svanberg. At the end of the1800 the angels and the apostles were removed from the pulpit. They were said to be unfashionable. However, nowadays the pulpit is in its original shape. 1894 a new tower building made out of stone with a gilded cross was constructed. Old wooden sculptures from the 1400?s were removed in 1895. These were however restored and put back in place in the 1920s. The baptismal basin made of soapstone dates back to 1200. Additionally the wooden Madonna is from 1300 and was originally painted and gilded. At one stage she was over painted yet is today restored. The small bell is from the Middle Ages while the larger is somewhat more recent. A gravestone formed as a trunk was raised 1930 in the memory of Selma Lagerlöfs sister Anna who died, 23 years of age at Gustavsfors mansion.
