Limestone bed
In the quarry you can see 40 meters of Kinnekulle´s most powerful layer of limestone the so-called " ortocerkalk". Fossils (hardened animals) of octopus and crayfish that lived in the sea 400 million years ago when this kind of rock was created during a period of 50 million years (1 mm per 1000 years) The limestone is clearly stratified in different colours; grey, green grey or red brown. These layers have different qualities and have been used for various purposes. The lower red limestone has been used for cement production and mortar. The upper layers are grey soapstone, red limestone and liverstone. These have mainly been used for different kinds of building material.
Cement Production
Most of the limestone in the quarry has been used for cement production during 1892-1979. About 80 million tons of limestone has been quarried. There was a risk that the ground water streams, which watered the below situated Munkängarna (meadows) would be cut off when the cement production stopped and the quarry was given a finishing treatment. A reservoir was constructed in the quarry because of this to guarantee watering of the meadows.
Fishing
The best way to see the quarry is from the parking lot or from the lay-by close to the big road in northeast. The easiest way to get down to the quarry is to drive towards Hällekis Säteri and then drive the former truck road between Hällekis and the quarry. Game fish are put out in the reservoir. You can buy a fishing permit in the Tourist bureau among other places.
From Hällekis:
Drive towards Medelplana. Turn towards Munkängarna. After a couple of 100 m turn left in crossing. The lake is end of the road.
