The world's sweatiest art tour

Here on the island of Tjörn on Sweden’s west coast, one hour north of Gothenburg, we love art and culture. We also love the triathlon! So for the tenth consecutive year we will be blending together our two passions at the end of August. You’ll have the opportunity to enjoy amazing art in the open-air Sculpture at Pilane exhibition and at the Nordic Watercolour Museum together with thousands of athletes competing in swimming, cycling and running.

During the rest of the year you’re free to put yourself to the test by walking, running or cycling between Skärhamn and Pilane. The route is clearly signposted and you can pick up a route map from any Bohuslän tourist office or download it here.

Tenson Tjörn Triathlon – August 26

Welcome to a triathlon weekend for the whole family. Since its start in 2008, the Tenson Tjörn Triathlon has grown to be one of Sweden’s largest triathlons. Every year triathletes from around the world come to the West Swedish island of Tjörn. This year some 1,500 participants will compete to see who can swim, ride and run the fastest around Tjörn and its surroundings.

It doesn’t matter if you’re on the island as a competitor or a spectator. Alongside the competition there will be all sorts of exciting activities. If you don’t want to do a full triathlon you can compete in the fun class. If your children want to try a triathlon you can register them for the Tjörn Triathlon Ungdom & Kids Race, which is held during the same weekend. More information here.

The Nordic Watercolour Museum – part of the world’s sweatiest art tour

The Nordic Watercolour Museum, stunningly located by the sea in Skärhamn, fosters an atmosphere of clarity and creativity. During the Tenson Tjörn Triathlon, the museum serves as the start and finish for the competitions.

Since its opening in 2000, the Nordic Watercolour Museum has exhibited world-class art, including works by Salvador Dali, Bill Viola, Louise Bourgeois, and by Swedish favourites such as Elsa Beskow, Anders Zorn and Lars Lerin.

The summer of 2007 will feature an anniversary exhibition of the work of Arne Isacsson. He was a great watercolour artist, who was inspired by nature, in particular the countryside of Bohuslän. He portrayed the movement of light through the seasons, and how colours and shades shift across the cliffs and the sea.

In conjunction with the Tenson Tjörn Triathlon you can try your hand at painting in the Watercolour Triathlon – the workshop with a sporty touch. Finish the three stations in the Watercolour Triathlon and you could be in for an award!

Sculpture at Pilane – also part of the world’s sweatiest art tour

Sculpture at Pilane is a totally unique, exciting and unusual art experience. Whether you’re visiting the beautiful, historical countryside of Bohuslän in conjunction with the Tenson Tjörn Triathlon or at some other time this summer, you’re in for something unforgettable. Because where else in the world can you enjoy fun, exciting and thought-provoking art, created by some of the world’s foremost artists, alongside grazing sheep and Iron Age stone circles.

In previous years, artists including Tony Cragg, Laura Ford, Maria Miesenberger, Bernar Venet and Katrine Helmersson have exhibited their sculptures. This year, on top of the hill stands one of the world’s largest and most beautiful sculptures – Jaume Plensa’s 14-metre tall ANNA.

Walk, run or bike part of the world’s sweatiest art tour

Now you can combine art experiences with exercise. The section of road between the Nordic Watercolour Museum in Skärhamn and Skulptur at Pilane is signposted. So whether you walk, run or ride a bike, finding your way is easy.
