The Tjörn Bridge

December 8, 2009
Share
Is part of the trunk road, Tjörnbroleden, which connects Tjörn to the mainland by Stenungsund. The Tjörn Bridge is one of three bridges along Tjörnbroleden. Tjörnbroleden, the trunk road that connects the islands of Tjörn and Orust to the mainland near Stenungsund was completed in 1960.

Three bridges are included in Tjörnbroleden; The Stenungsö Bridge, The Källösund Bridge and the bridge across the Askerö fjord, The Tjörn Bridge. The latter was hit in January 1980 by a vessel, which had lost its course in heavy fog, causing the bridge’s main span to collapse. The new Tjörn Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 366 metres, which was opened in November 1981. A bridge, which would normally take 3-4 years to build, was finished in only 17 months!

There is a beautiful rest area with plenty of parking spaces by the northern abutment.
