Bovallstrand can trace its history back to the 16th century. Shipping and fishing were the principal industries. During the 19th century, the men of Bovallstrand fished for sprats. Bovallstrand was also the port of shipment for granite hewn from big Korpåsberget rock just north of the centre.
The fishing village has a genuine old Bohuslän atmosphere. To wander among the old boat-houses in the harbour area is, in itself, an experience. To talk to the local fishermen who have been out and caught herring, mackerel, cod or dabs, is also an experience, though not so easy for ‘foreigners’ (including some of the Swedes!). On the quay-side right in the centre is the Bryggcafét where they serve freshly caught fish and shellfish.
The open-air bathing place at Badholmarna was built during the 1930's when tourism was starting to provide income for the inhabitants, and at the end of the ‘30's a restaurant opened that is no longer in existence.
Just north of Bovallstrand lies Gerlesborg with Bohuslän’s most important cultural centre - Gerlesborg Art School. This art school has an international reputation
