-This year the popular sailing regatta is celebrating 45 years!
Tjörn Runt is Sweden’s largest regatta and the largest in the world inside the skerries. The Tjörn Runt event gets underway during the third week in August each year – the sailing competition where Olympic champions and family sailors share the same course and compete under the same conditions. The competition is taking place for the 45th year on 16 August 2008.

This year at least 600 boats are expected to participate in Tjörn Runt and some 400 dinghies in Lilla Tjörn Runt. Depending on the weather conditions, between 25,000 and 50,000 participants and spectators will be descending on the municipality and surroundings to enjoy the competitions and the atmosphere. For a small municipality such as Stenungsund with barely 23,000 inhabitants, this is clearly a very big event!

The start takes place off the island of Stenungsön with the first start at 08.20. The finishing line is in the inner part of the Stig Fjord. The most popular places for spectators are Klädesholmen, Kyrkesund and the rocks outside Björholmen on the west side of Tjörn.
Tjörn Runt is arranged by SSS Arrangemang AB, on behalf of Stenungsunds Segelsällskap. SSS Arrangemang AB is one of Stenungsunds Segelsällskap wholly-owned limited companies.

For more information about the event contact STSS chairman Lars Berglund on +46(0)303-67660 or send a mail to  . You can also read more at www.stss.nu

It is likely that quite a lot of us don’t know much about tug of war. Nor do most people probably know that it is actually a major sport among both men and women and that Sweden is very highly ranked in the world. But now is your chance to find out more – this year the World Championship is coming to Stenungsund! Come and see the explosive event on site on 4-7 September.

We have put a few questions to John-Kenneth Horseide, also called Jonke, at Stenungsund’s Tug of War Club.
There are perhaps not many people who are aware of tug of war as a sport – however, probably most people have tried it at Midsummer or at other events, says Jonke. Those who see a ”real” tug of war match are usually surprised – technique and tactics are crucial and the spectators can almost feel the explosive atmosphere on the field. It is not for nothing that tug of war is described as one of the toughest sports in which to take part.

The fascination of tug of war is usually described by the participants as finding the primal force inside and quite simply putting everything you’ve got into it! You might think that the sport is strongly dominated by men, but the fact is that there are a large number of female practitioners! We are working hard to erase the macho label, says Jonke. It is actually the Swedish Ladies Team that has shone most brightly in recent years and can boast of being reigning world champions! We are hoping that this World Championship will also generate a lot of medals for Sweden and the ladies are in a very good position. The feeling is at Stenungsund tug of war club that this year the Swedish men will also do well. There has been a change of generations in the men’s team and they seem to be raring to go.

From 1500 to 2000 active participants from 20-25 nations are expected at Stenungsund. Hotels, youth hostels and campsites are already just about fully booked. At the same time as we are holding this major event, Stenungsund Tug of War Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary, which suits us perfectly says Jonke. We can’t imagine any better way of celebrating our 10th anniversary than arranging a World Championship on our home ground! We are also hoping that some of the club’s members will qualify for the national team – naturally that would be an even greater sensation, concludes Jonke!
