A pink star fish at Havets hus A pink star fish welcomes you at Havets Hus.

Unique life in Havets Hus

In the summer resort Lysekil is one of the marine treasures of the west coast – Havets Hus!
Visit this unique sealift centre and allow yourself to be admired by ray and shark, cod and mackerel, dab and lobster.

Havets Hus is a sea life centre, open to the public, which offers a wonderful experience, whilst at the same time increasing your knowledge of the marine life in the Kattegat and Skagerrak as well as in the Gullmar Fjord. You can make the acquaintance of around 100 different species of marine animals and plants – from the large conger eel to the small Gullmar anemone.

The Gullmar Fjord and the Kattegat/Skagerrak
The Gullmar Fjord is unique in that it is Sweden’s only threshold-fjord. The depth of the fjord varies from 40 metres, by the threshold, to 120 metres at its deepest point. The water in the Gullmar Fjord comes from The Skagerrak, which means that animals that live at a specific depth in The Skagerrak can also be found at that depth in the Gullmar Fjord.

Unique marine life
Havets Hus has a total of 40 aquariums, the largest of which contains 140,000 litres of salt water. In the tunnel tank, which was opened in the summer of 1999, you are surrounded by water, in which, among others, cod, atlantic horse mackerel, small-spotted catshark, herring, flat-fish, piked dogfish and conger swim around.

The water for Havets Hus is continuously taken in from the Gullmar Fjord at a depth of 32 metres. The salt water, with a salinity of 0.30-0.33 percent, is very high quality, which means good oxygenation and no pollutants. This is a must if the fishes and animals are to stay healthy.

Theatre of the sea
You can sit in the theatre by the cylinder tank and be captured by the marine life on view through the large acrylic glass window. The theatre becomes a cinema several times a day when short marine biological films are shown.

The catfish Proud new parents.

Sensation in the aquarium!
On the 13th January the catfish-eggs started to hatch successfully. Thousands of little catfish can now be viewed and for a sea life centre this is wholly unique. It is very rare for a sea life centre to succeed with the natural reproduction cycle, where the parents themselves look after their eggs.

New this year
After working with the Atlanterhavs Park in Ålesund, Norway, Havets Hus is now able to display two anglers. This ugly fish lies, well camouflaged, luring its prey with its waving back fin and sucking it into its large mouth where the backwards-pointing teeth grab it. Gone!

Don’t miss…
This year’s exhibition is called "In the mind of a cod" and opens in the spring.
