The fishing Dutchman

Dutchman Andy van Assema thought that Dalsland would be the perfect place to start up a sport fishing company. He fell in love with the landscapes of Dalsland and moved to the small town of Fengersfors with his wife and child. This is where he decided to start his company, Sportfishing Dalsland, and it attracts guests from all over Europe.

Andy has been passionately interested in sport fishing since he was a child and he has been on fishing trips all around Sweden. When it came to him to start a business, with sport fishing as the main attraction, the choice was obvious – West Sweden, Dalsland and Fengersfors.

‘I can’t think of a better place to do it. All of this pristine nature midway between two international airports, Oslo and Gothenburg, is unbeatable. And then we have a wide variety of fishing waters such as small inland lakes and the Vänerskärgården archipelago between Amål and Mellerud, says Andy.

Sportfishing Dalsland offers accommodation, guided fishing trips and boat hire. Sustainability is the focus of the business and it operates a catch and release policy: it’s the fishing experience that is important, not the hunt.

-        Perhaps the most enjoyable experience here is fishing for pike in early spring. You can see the fish going for the bait on the surface of the water and it can get pretty spectacular. Our boats are well equipped for trolling and vertical fishing too, so when the fish dive deep we can follow them, Andy explains.

During his first couple of years in business Andy received visitors from his homeland and even from Belgium and Germany. Recently his clientele has included people from a number of other European countries.

-        We’ve been getting clients from France, Scotland, Italy, Austria and Norway and even people from Canada. I think that a lot of our guests have friends who have visited us and then recommended us. Word-of-mouth is the best kind of marketing.

Three recommendations on what to do in Dalsland from Andy van Assema

‘All of my recommendations have the same philosophy: they prioritise high quality, they are constantly developing their businesses and sustainability is at the heart of what they do’.
