Guided Fika tours
Alingsås

A tour for all the fika lovers which takes in some of the best cafés in town

Fika lovers wants to visit the small town of Alingsås in West Sweden as it is the fika capital of Sweden. The Swedish fika, a coffee or tea break with buns and biscuits, is a national institution in Sweden and almost obligatory in workplaces.

In Sweden workmates do it, friends do it, families do it – and you should visit Alingsås and do it. We are talking about the fika, of course.

But why Alingsås?

A perfect storm of social-cultural phenomena came together to create the café culture that exists here. As far back as the 18th century there were bakers shops in the town and the industrial age in the 19th and 20th centuries meant that women had to go out to work and no longer had the time to bake at home. Also, the old town centre of Alingsås was not bulldozed away like many were in Sweden in the 1960s and café owners could remain because the premises were cheap. But that’s history, let’s get on with the tour.

Fika tour

Your expert guide takes you on a 90-minute tour of some of the town’s cafés while telling you all about Sweden’s love affair with coffee and the story behind the town’s café culture. At the cafés you stop off at you get to sample Swedish cinnamon buns, biscuits, chocolate truffles, pastries and sandwiches. The tour is in English and Swedish.

With around 20 cafés, some of which get mention in Sweden’s leading restaurant guide The White Guide. Alingsås has a unique café culture and the tour is a must-do if you are a fika lover.
