Dancing cranes at Lake Hornborga
Falköping
Hornborgasjön is one of the most important bird lakes in Europe. Thousands of dancing cranes on the way to their breeding grounds attract visitors to the wetlands of Västergötland between Skövde, Skara and Falköping. There are many observation points and a very interesting exhibition.
The rites of spring
The most well-known site for watching the cranes dance is at the southern end of Hornborgasjön. The first flocks of cranes arrive here as early as the middle of March. Normally the cranes can be seen until the end of April, when they fly further north to their breeding grounds. The peak of the crane season is usually at the beginning of April. The birds lunge into the air, bow and circle around each other in their dances. You can’t predict a specific time during the day when they dance, but it almost certainly happens at some point.
Easy access to Trandansen
There are plenty of parking spaces at Trandansen with excellent views, an information building with an exhibition about the dance, general tourist information, souvenirs for sale and refreshments. Ornithologists are there every day during the season for cranes to answer your questions about bird life around Hornborgasjön.
Stay, eat and have fun
