Trollhätte canal and lockarea

Discover an unique area - The art of vertical displacement

The three separate lock terraces create the idyllic and green park area of Gamle Dal’n. Here one finds lock segment from 1800, 1844 and 1916. The four locks in use today were inaugurated in 1916, and have a difference in level of 32m.

Trollhättan´s most beautiful destination is without a doubt the imposing falls and the impressive locks - a magnificent area that has been attracting to locals and tourists for centuries.

The art of vertical displacement!

It is impressive indeed to stand close to a 90 meter long ship, weighing over 4000 tonnes, while it slowly makes its way through Trollhättan´s locks. 200 years ago, it was wooden boats, not modern container ships that made their way down the canal, near today's busy thoroughfare.

At the locks, past meets present; there are three systems, one dating from 1800, one from 1844 and the latest from 1916. The ones from the 1800s are long since disused but the latest system is still used by both commercial ships and leisure boats.

A large number of cargo ships pass through Trollhättan´s lock system every year. In the summer there are also about 4000 leisure boats passing through.

Apart from the locks, you’ll find a pleasant
café (open during summer), guest harbours and
the Canal Museum. Boat tours are also available.
