Vittene Culture Trail
Trollhättan

Welcome to the site of Sweden's third largest gold find

In 1995, Vittene became widely known in Sweden as a site of ancient relics when four and a half gold rings weighing a total of 1.9 kg were found. Further excavations showed a settlement with probable goldsmith activities. There are also several tombs and burial grounds nearby. A 3.5 km hiking trail was prepared in the area that takes you past the important historical sites.

The Vittene treasure

The Vittene treasure is Sweden's third largest gold treasure by weight, found at Vittene, Norra Björke parish, in Trollhättan municipality south of Hunneberg. The find turned out to be one of Sweden's greatest gold treasures from the time around the birth of Christ. In connection with a search of the area, further finds of a settlement from the Iron Age were found. Today, the gold find in Vittene can be viewed in the Gold Room at the Statens Historiska Museum in Stockholm. In Åsaka-Björke Hembygdsgård there are copies of 4 of the 5 objects in the Vittene treasure.

Here you can read more about the Vittene tresure.

Culture trail

During 2008 and 2009, extensive clearing and restoration work was carried out in the area that made possible the 3.5-kilometer-long cultural trail that exists here today. The trail is staked out by red marked sticks and at the sites there are information signs that tell the fascinating story of the area.

Directions

From Trollhättan you take road 44 towards Grästorp, turn towards Norra Björke and then follow the road according to the arrows on this map

Please note that the trail is not adapted for the disabled and that there is also no rain cover at the resting area at Gravfältet Högarna.
