Södra Råda timmerkyrka
Södra Råda
At the old church site of Södra Råda once stood one of Sweden’s best-preserved medieval timber churches, adorned with magnificent paintings from the 14th and 15th centuries – an invaluable part of our shared cultural heritage. The church was destroyed by fire in 2001 but has since been brought back to life through the same craftsmanship and building methods used in the Middle Ages.
Legend has it that...
...the old wooden church of Södra Råda, outside Gullspång, appeared mysteriously out of the mist. One morning, it was simply there. Today, we know that the timber church – which was burned to the ground in an act of arson in 2001 – was originally built in the early 14th century.
An important cultural heritage site
The medieval wooden church was considered one of the foremost cultural monuments in the Nordic region. The 14th-century paintings and the trefoil-shaped ceiling testify to great artistic ambition and considerable resources. In the 15th century, the nave was decorated by Master Amund, one of the most important Swedish church painters of the late Middle Ages.
An impressive project that brought new knowledge
Over the course of many years, the reconstruction was carried out using the same methods as when the original church was built nearly seven hundred years ago. This reconstruction project has provided valuable new insights into medieval building techniques, contributing to the preservation of historic structures both nationally and internationally.
Sponsor a shingle
You can take part in the continuing reconstruction of the church by sponsoring one or more wooden shingles. The remaining work involves cladding the church’s exterior walls. You also have the opportunity to write your personal greeting to the future on your sponsored shingle!
Guided tours
On Saturdays and Sundays during the summer, you can join a guided tour inside the church. The tour offers insights into medieval building techniques, the unique paintings, and the archaeological findings. Groups can book private tours at other times throughout the year.
Good to know
You are welcome to explore the old church site on your own at any time of the year and enjoy the permanent outdoor exhibitions. Much of the area is gravel-covered, though some parts have uneven surfaces. An accessible restroom is available on-site. The surroundings are beautiful and perfect for a picnic—so feel free to bring your own basket and stay for a while.
