Rågårdsvik Skaftö
Rågårdsvik is the southernmost village on Skaftö and considered to be the oldest settlement on the island. Here you will find Rågårdsvik Pensionat, a tennis court and an inviting small beach with a long jetty. A calm and peaceful summer paradise with the sea just in front.
The oldest and the southermost village on the island
In the 16th century, Rågårdsvik was inhabited by fishermen. Bohuslän was Danish then and did not turn Swedish until 1658. From being a proper fishing community, Rågårdsvik developed into a society based on shipping. During the 18th century, the fishermen went bank fishing for ling and cod. Meanwhile, people from surrounding farms moved to Rågårdsvik. Rågårdsvik was then the most important and largest settlement in the southern part of Skaftö.
During the latter part of the 19th century, Rågårdsvik was completely changed from a fishing village into a typical shipping community in Bohuslän. There were now both a grocery shop and a guest-house.
During the 1920's, doctors from the inland and on the east coast began to emphasize the importance of the salty wind and water on the west coast with the iodine saturated air in the summer, especially for children's health. More and more guest houses were opened. In 1926 Rågårdsvik Pensionat opened and is still run by the same family. Since then summer guests have enjoyed all that the place offers.
A summer paradise with the sea just in front
Rågårdsvik is located on the north side of the Ellös fjord, in the south, with a nice sheltered bathing place and a nice little archipelago that leads out to the open sea. The guest-house is located two steps up the hill where there is also a tennis court. There are about ten guest spots at the jetty and nice walk ways with view points. Today, Rågårdsvik is a calm and peaceful summer paradise with the sea just in front. A cosy atmosphere and nice morning swims are guaranteed.
