Skara Cathedral

The cathedral is the very symbol of Skara. The first known cathedral was consecrated around 1150, but new finds indicate that there was a church here during the previous century. Wars and fires have taken their toll on the church over the years, but despite these it has remained standing, and pulled itself up from the gravel, ashes and humiliation.
The restoration of 1947-1949 revealed a well-kept crypt from the 10th century and during the 1999 restoration they found stone remnants older than that. In the most recent reconstruction a cross vault was built over the crypt, making it a beautiful room for worship.

The current Gothic design dates to the 1886-1894 restoration under the leadership of architect Helgo Zettervall. The furnishings are unique and include the Soop Mausoleum and Bo Beskow´s handsome glass mosaic window.

And yes, Skara´s pants - the name comes from the flat towers built in 1809-1810. People thought they looked like a pair of pants and the name stuck though the towers have clearly changed shape since!

Skara Domkyrka is an active church with services and ceremonies which may at times restrict access to the church for tourists.
