Våmb church
Skövde

A mediaeval church with historic details

Våmb Church is the oldest and smallest church in Skövde, and is one of Sweden’s best-known Romanesque churches. It is both a place of tranquillity and a fascinating destination.

Today, Våmb Church is one of Sweden’s best-known Romanesque churches, with its distinctive layout and its preserved mediaeval character. It was built in the mid-12th century, and has several mediaeval wooden sculptures. The church is mainly built from limestone, and is surrounded by its ancient churchyard.

Here, you can see a 13th century baptismal font, which is still used for the christenings held here each year. There are also two paintings of the Madonna inside the church. The older painting dates from the 13th century and is badly damaged, but the more recent 15th century painting is well preserved and depicts a standing Madonna in pale colours.

The church is open during the daytime in the summer. Visits can be booked at other times.

Historic cycling tour

Combine a trip to Våmb Church with a historic cycling tour. From Våmb, you can follow the cycle path which then carries on along the old railway line towards Varnhem and the monastery church. The tour is approximately 11 kilometres long in each direction, and riders will be rewarded with a variety of historic sights.
