Gamla torget
Tidaholm

An Active Square with Bustling Life

At the heart of Tidaholm's center, you'll find the Old Square, known as "Gamla torget." Enjoy unique buildings, culinary experiences, artworks, and charming small-town shopping. The square comes to life every Wednesday with the popular market, and throughout the year, various events are organized here.

History

The Old Square is visible on maps dating back to 1804, but it received its current name in 1914. During the 1920s and 30s, the square was paved with cobblestones. The yellow Basar Building stands as a reminder of the original structures around the square. It was erected in 1894 by Tidaholms bruk (ironworks), with its small corner tower reflecting the architectural style of the time. On the opposite side of the square stands a red brick building constructed in 1898, which served as Tidaholms Bruks Mejeri (dairy). Two artworks grace the square: "Vattenbäraren" (The Water Carrier), unveiled in 1968 and created by the Tidaholm-born artist Jan Steen, and "Pumpen" (The Pump), which used to be an important meeting place for fetching water and sharing news.
