A Cottage Haven with Hiking Opportunities

Think of a scene straight out of “Pettson and Findus” – that's Dammsjöås. Nestled in the heart of the Alingsås countryside, Dammsjöås is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – a peaceful retreat surrounded by forest, meadows, and history. Whether you're here to hike, relax, explore local heritage, or gather around a fire, Dammsjöås offers a slice of Swedish rural charm that's both tranquil and timeless.

A Historic Cottage Landscape

Dammsjöås is one of Alingsås' many hidden gems – a traditional Swedish torp (small cottage farm) surrounded by forest and open fields. Since 1987, the land and buildings have been jointly owned by Alingsås Hembygdsförening (local heritage association) and Alingsås Friluftsklubb (outdoor club), thanks to a generous donation by the last resident, Allan Karlsson. His story, and the history of the cottage, is told on-site through informative signs and displays.

Wander around the site and explore the red cottages with white trim, open the creaky barn door to find a small exhibition, or pump your own fresh drinking water from the well. Keep an eye out for the flock of sheep – there should be 21 in total, unless the wolf has been around!

Nature and Culture Trail (2.6 km)

In spring 2014, a 2.6 km nature and culture trail was established, complete with several information points explaining the surrounding landscape, cultural history, and local wildlife. Along the trail, you’ll also find a campfire area and two timber wind shelters, perfect for cooking outdoors or spending a night under the stars.

Education and Outdoor Learning

Dammsjöås also serves as an educational site. In cooperation with Hjälmared Folk High School, the area is used as a training ground for students on the one-year Adventure Coach program. Since 2015, students from Ängaboskolan also visit Dammsjöås for outdoor education days focused on nature and wilderness skills.

How to Get There

From Alingsås city center, take road 180 towards Borås, and follow the blue signs toward Maryd. Continue straight for about 3 km until you reach the small village of Maryd. From there, follow smaller white signs marked “Dammsjöås” – the road narrows, but you're on the right track. After about 2 more kilometers, you've arrived.

Dammsjöåsleden – The Dammsjöås Trail (7 km)

Looking for a longer hike? Try the Dammsjöåsleden – a newly marked 7 km trail that stretches between Ängabostugan and Dammsjöås. This route follows a mix of existing trails, gravel roads, tractor paths, and some unmarked terrain. It is not stroller-friendly, except in limited sections.

The trail is marked with yellow dots on trees and yellow arrows on posts. You can start the hike from either Dammsjöås or Ängabostugan.

Welcome to Dammsjöås – where nature, history, and peacefulness meet.
