Wallpaper with Cliché Print from Dufour & Leroy’s Factory, Paris

The wallpaper Greek Festivities dates back to 1824 and is created using the cliché printing technique. It features various shades of gray on white paper, producing a delicate and detailed pattern. Originally installed in the grand salon of Nolhaga Castle, it is now displayed in the western cabinet, also known as the wedding room.

This historic wallpaper reflects the neoclassical fascination with ancient Greek culture and celebrations, depicting scenes that evoke the spirit and elegance of festive gatherings from antiquity. The use of cliché printing—a method involving etched metal plates—allowed for intricate designs and subtle tonal variations that were highly prized in the early 19th century.

Greek Festivities is not only a beautiful decorative element but also an important cultural artefact that offers insight into the artistic and manufacturing practices of its time. Its preservation at Nolhaga Castle allows visitors to appreciate both the craftsmanship of historic wallpaper production and the aesthetic tastes of the period.
