Järta's Park
Alingsås

A centrally located park filled with play, art, and history

Järta’s Park, located in the heart of Alingsås, was renovated and reopened in time for the city's 400th anniversary in 2019, an event honored by a visit from Crown Princess Victoria. This lively urban park invites visitors to explore miniature versions of old shops, admire the bronze sculpture “Play with Ball”, or climb up into a charming treehouse. A welcoming space full of life all year round!

A Park for Children

Järta’s Park was officially reopened in autumn 2009 as The Children’s Park. The transformation aimed to enhance its appeal and establish it as a natural meeting place in the town center. Designed with a turn-of-the-century theme, the park reflects the town’s tradition of beautiful wooden architecture.

Here you'll find miniature versions of a bakery, candy factory, and café — perfect for imaginative play — along with a slide, obstacle course, and a large treehouse. There’s also a small stage occasionally used for local events and performances.

Plants and Public Art

The park is home to a variety of trees and shrubs including elm, birch, linden, Norway maple, cherry, and rhododendron. Along Kungsgatan, you’ll see a row of round-leaved whitebeam trees.

Connecting the street and the park is a small square with a seasonal fountain known as “The Egg”, which is stored indoors during winter. At the center of the park stands the bronze sculpture “Play with Ball”, created by Åke Thornblad in 1966. Thornblad was, at the time, a sculpture teacher at Valand Art School in Gothenburg.

Historical Background

In 1769, the area was used as a meadow, field, or kitchen garden, just outside the eastern city entrance. By the late 1870s, the city began expanding again, both eastward and westward.

In 1865, Judge Fredrik Rutger Järta moved to Alingsås. He purchased a house at the corner of Östra Ringgatan and Kungsgatan (then known as Allmänna vägen), along with a fenced garden plot directly across from his home. When Järta passed away in 1882, he bequeathed this plot to the city, with the wish that it be maintained as a public park.
