The lookout tower
Alingsås

An adventure for the whole family

Visit the old lookout tower on top of Nolhagaberget and enjoy the massive view of the city of Alingsås.

From Air Defense to Viewpoint

The tower was built in 1941 as part of Sweden’s air defense during World War II. According to records, around 200 similar anti-aircraft towers were constructed across Sweden during this time, and today only a few remain preserved. In 2021, the Municipality of Alingsås initiated a restoration of the old tower with the aim of making it more accessible to visitors.

A fascinating history

Inside the tower, the level below the gun platform housed quarters for two soldiers and an ammunition storage room. The level below that contained accommodation for six soldiers, and beneath that yet another room for six more. At the very bottom of the tower, the anti-aircraft gun was stored, along with space for three soldiers.

In total, 17 soldiers could be stationed in the tower at the same time. An additional 40 mm anti-aircraft gun was installed on the water reservoir at Häradsberget, which then served as Alingsås’ second fixed air defense position. This gave the town air defense coverage from two sides, allowing for effective response to potential enemy aircraft.

When standing at the entrance of the tower and looking straight up, you can see two sealed door openings. These were once entrances to the rooms used by the soldiers stationed in the tower. An external staircase connected the tower’s four levels.

To maintain a high level of readiness, it was important that the soldiers could rest and take shelter close to the gun position. During World War II, the tower was camouflaged to blend in with the surrounding forest. Tree trunks and branches were fastened with wire to a number of embedded steel loops. This camouflage broke up the tower’s silhouette, smoothing out flat surfaces and sharp edges to create irregular shadows instead.
