With the purse as a weapon
Alingsås
Located in the heart of Alingsås, With the Handbag as a Weapon is a powerful sculpture inspired by a historic photograph that embodies the spirit of resistance and bravery. Created by artist Susanna Arwin, this evocative artwork honors the universal act of standing up against injustice, reminding us of the strength found in everyday courage.
On April 13, 1985, a photograph was taken in Växjö depicting a woman striking a Nazi with her handbag during a demonstration. The photo, captured by press photographer Hans Runesson, has since gained widespread attention and received several awards.
About 30 years later, artist Susanna Arwin used this photograph as the basis for the sculpture With the Handbag as a Weapon. Two copies of the sculpture were made. After both Växjö and Varberg declined to accept the work as a donation, the sculptures ended up in private ownership. Recently, Maria Levin, Joakim Levin, and Palle Stenberg—who have roots in Alingsås and are founders of Nudie Jeans—donated the sculpture to the municipality of Alingsås.
The work has sparked strong and diverse reactions. According to the artist, the sculpture focuses on the act itself, not the individual performing it—it highlights civil courage rather than portraying a specific person. The intention was to create a universal female figure that many can identify with.
With the Handbag as a Weapon is part of Susanna Arwin’s artistic project The Swedish Aunt, which began in 1995. Through various techniques, she portrays the classic “Swedish aunt.” As a sculptor, Arwin works with glass, porcelain, bronze, and concrete. Her works are often interactive and engaging.
The sculpture is installed in Åmanska Park (outside Grand Hotel).
