Nice view over the lakes
Buterud is a delightful and quiet place along the Dalsland canal. From this year it is possible to rent the lock keepers cottage, right next to the lock station. From the house you have a nice view over the lakes and the lock where the gates are still opened manually by the lock keeper, exactly in the same way as when the canal was first open in 1868.
Newly renovated with an old-fashioned charm
The lock keepers cottage was renovated in the spring of 2021 and it is now a 45 sqm charming holiday home with an old-fashioned charm. Bathroom with shower, toilet and washing machine. Fully equipped kitchen with dining table. Living room with a sofa bed for two persons and bedroom with double bed. In the garden there is a dining area with room for 6 people.

Your own boat
Just below the cottage you will find the boat with oars and engine. Fuel is not included so you need to refill the fuel tank before leaving the cottage. As a guest in our Lock keeper cottages you can travel through the locks of the canal for free during the summer. Please observe that we will take out the boat during the vinter time.To the south you can go to Håverud with restaurants and the famous aqueduct. If you travel north you can visit the rock carvings in Högsbyn or eat ice cream in Långbron.

Directions: Take road 166 from Mellerud towards Bäckefors / Ed. After 8 kilometers, turn towards Åsensbruk (NOTE: it is the second exit signposted towards Åsensbruk). After 3 km drive straight towards Dals Långed. After 2 km turn right towards "Buterud 10" and follow the signs towards Buterud. After the local sign "Buterud" drive 900 meters and turn right towards Buterud's lock. The road is a dead end.
NOTE: The GPS can show you the wrong way to the lock station so you might end up on the wrong side of the canal (east side).
Fishing
If you want to fish, you need a fishing license. There are two fishing areas by the cottage:
Lake Åklångs FVO - Which includes lake Åklång, Lillesjön, Glycksjön och Glycksjö ände. You can buy fishing license at Team Sportia in Mellerud or Melleruds Tourist Information office.

Nature reserve Buterud
Hike or pick mushrooms and berrys at the Nature reserve Buterud. Hike through wild garlic scented deciduous forests and mountain ridges full of Ramson.
