Glacial river deposits

Grimmestorp Nature Reserve, with Grimmestorp Forest, is special in many ways due to its glacial river deposits in the form of terraces, kettle holes, and gravel ridges. The hilly landscape is a delta formation built up by glacial river material in an ancient glacial lake around 10,000 years ago. This delta formation is referred to as the Härja Terrace, named after the Härja parish.

Grimmestorps Stream

In a deep valley, Grimmestorpsån rushes forth. The water flow can be impressive, especially during the snowmelt. Along the stream, ostrich fern grows in fine stands. It has two different types of leaves, with and without spore clusters. Here, you can also find grey alder and the white-flowered shrub bird cherry, which is a garden escapee. Both the common sandpiper and kingfisher have been spotted by the stream.

The impact of grazing animals on the forest

Grimmestorp Forest was grazed by cattle from Grimmestorp Manor until the mid-1900s. The impact of grazing animals on the forest can still be seen today, primarily through the presence of grazing-favored plants such as meadow-rue, cow parsley, and grasses like tufted hairgrass. Today, the forest is regenerating and beginning to transition into old-growth forest. The reserve contains plenty of deadwood, which benefits both fungi and birds.

Notable attractions

If you take a short detour from the trail, you'll reach Grimmestorp Manor, which dates back to the 17th century. The estate, its buildings, and the surrounding beautiful nature provide inspiration for various activities and events.
