Cycling on the Varaslätten plain

  • 08 May, 2020

How do you fancy a cycle tour on the Varaslätten plain? Sounds great to us! This suggested cycle route of roughly 20 km takes you past a picturesque castle, through open countryside and to several exciting visitor attractions.

The route starts and ends at Bjertorp Slott, where you can begin your outing with a tasty lunch or why not buy a take-away picnic lunch? Find out more here! You then cycle past Vara-Bjertorp GK, or why not stop in if you have time to spare? The course enjoys a fantastic castle setting in the heart of the Västgötaslätten plains and has been named the best course in the region for many years by Golf Digest magazine.

Once you have left Bjertorp and reached the large crossroads, turn right for Tråvad, followed shortly by a left turn for Edsvära. You are now heading for Halla Gård, a fine pig farm that is run today by Anders Gunnarsson, whose concept is “happier and healthier restaurant pigs”Find out more here! Once you reach the three-way-junction after around 2.5 km, turn left for Kvänum. Continue for roughly 0.5 km before turning right when you come to the large, well-tended farm. Further along this road is Halla Gård.

Your cycle route continues on towards Kvänum, where everything from good food and leisure activities to overnight accommodation is on offer. You travel along idyllic country roads across the Varaslätten plain, past red timber buildings, well-tended farms, horse paddocks and wind turbines. At times a cycle track runs alongside the road on the left-hand side and we recommend that you use this where possible. When you come to Bjertorps Hästklinik with its numerous horse paddocks, continue straight on to Kvänum, past Kvänum Church and up to the three-way junction.

At the junction turn left and cycle into Kvänum. Follow the road to the mini roundabout, where you can check out the sculpture Drake. Take the second exit at the roundabout up towards Storgatan, past the flower shop, paint shop and gym until you see Lumber & Karle on your left. You can stop here for a bite to eat and try your luck at bowling or shuffleboard. Perhaps you might fancy an overnight stay and a little relaxation in their spa and relaxation suite after all the pedalling? Find out more here! Right beside the hotel beyond the parish hall is Kvänum boules court.

Time to pedal on to Oltorp friluftsområde (recreation area). Here you will find an illuminated trail for both walking and mountain-biking. In addition, there is a small bathing lake and tennis courts on site. From Storgatan in Kvänum, you turn onto Nya vägen, which takes you to Oltorp after approximately 1.5 km. A cycle track runs parallel with Nya vägen on the right-hand side and we recommend that you use this. Not far from Oltorps friluftsområde is Qvänum Mat & Malt, the micro-brewery and distillery on the Varaslätten plain. Brewery & distillery evenings take place from time to time, and it’s a good idea to pre-book. Find out more here!

It’s once again time to follow the road through the open countryside of the Varaslätten plain back to Bjertorp Slott, where your tour began. After nearly 2 km turn left onto the gravel road towards Hindstorp. When you reach the main tarmac road again, turn left once more and it’s just 0.5 km or so to Bjertorp Slott. After a long day of cycling, a delicious meal and a cosy night’s sleep here seems very inviting. Find out more here!
