Paddle in Alingsås
Alingsås Municipality is full of lakes, rivers, and waterways that are perfect for a paddle adventure all year round. The largest lake, Lake Mjörn, just west of the town centre, boasts the second-largest archipelago in the region after Lake Vänern and is sometimes compared to an inland sea, with plenty of exciting islands to explore.
Many of the lakes are concentrated in the southern and western parts of the area, making it possible to paddle for several days if you wish. If you can bring a canoe trolley, your route options expand even more.
Suggested Routes
Lake Mjörn
Lake Mjörn is the largest body of water in the municipality, with open water, numerous islands, and many cosy coves. The abundance of islands gives it a bit of an archipelago feel. A recommended day trip starts from Lövekulle Camping and heads out to Risön Nature Reserve, a group of three islands that has declared itself a republic! On Svensholmen there’s a designated campsite with a BBQ area and shelter if you’d like to stay overnight. Just be aware that some islands are bird protection areas in early summer, so respect posted signs.
Lake Gerdsken
Right next to Alingsås town centre lies Lake Gerdsken, a calm and peaceful lake popular with locals for swimming in summer. Start your paddle from Lillån at Stampens Mill in the centre and head out for a relaxing afternoon on the water.
Färgen Lakes
From Gerdsken you can reach Lilla Färgen and Stora Färgen via the winding Forsån stream, ducking under small bridges and carrying your boat a short section to reach the water. Stora Färgen has several islands that are bird protection areas, but you can land at Lilla Slättö or stop for a break at Lygnareds Camping.
Lake Ömmern and Other Waterways
Ömmern offers great paddling and wildlife sightings, though remember to respect bird protection zones and get a fishing permit if you plan to fish. Smaller lakes like Nären, Ören, and Laxån are more sheltered and fine for calm paddling, though water levels can affect how much you need to carry or portage your boat.
Multi-Day Trip Ideas
A classic multi-day loop is: Alingsås → Mjörn → Sävelången → Torskabotten → Ömmern → Stora and Lilla Färgen → Gerdsken → Alingsås — about 40 km with a few short portages and one longer one of around 2 km, so a canoe trolley comes in handy. Another great option is to paddle out to one of Mjörn’s many islands and camp overnight — Lilla Risön has the only permitted overnight spot. Just be mindful of seasonal bird protection zones and always check navigational maps and signs.
Equipment Rental
Don’t have your own kayak or canoe? You can rent gear at Kayakomaten, Lövekulle Camping, Lygnareds Camping, or Sjölyckan in Tollered.
