Hjortmarka stretches like a green wedge from the forests in the east right into the city, making it a convenient destination for locals and visitors alike. The diverse terrain offers scenic viewpoints – perfect for a coffee break in nature. If you're lucky, you might spot an osprey, buzzard, or black woodpecker.

A number of well-maintained trails wind through the area, catering to both casual walkers and more experienced hikers. At the Skogshjortarna cabin, you’ll find showers, a sauna, and a small café when open – see the local club’s website for opening hours.

Running and Hiking Trails

Hjortmarka offers a variety of scenic trails ranging from 1.7 km to 10 km in length. Whether you want a quick walk or a longer hike, there’s a trail to suit every level. Here you can find a digital map of the area's trails.

On Sundays during the season, the local orienteering club OK Skogshjortarna organizes quiz walks (tipspromenader) – check the events calendar to see when the next one takes place.

Nature and Landscape

Closer to the city, the area features mature oak forests with open woodland and blueberry-filled undergrowth. As you move further east or to higher ground, pines become more common. You'll also find plenty of deadwood from birch, pine, and oak – a sign of a healthy, biodiverse forest.

Lakes

The lakes of Hjortmarka are a key part of the area’s charm. Aside from a small millpond and two artificial fishing ponds in the southwest, the lakes are nutrient-poor forest lakes with largely untouched hydrology. Especially Stora Kroksjön – a large, clear-water lake – offers a sense of true wilderness with its quiet, undisturbed location.
