Public Art in Götene Municipality
The Public Art initiative, led by Götene Lions between 2018 and 2022, celebrates the area's rich cultural heritage through contemporary sculpture. Four permanent artworks, each located in one of the municipality's largest communities, reflect the history, identity and character of the places they represent. Saint Helena till häst, Götene
Location: Park beside Järnvägsgatan, at the entrance to Götene Residential Care Home
The striking bronze sculpture Saint Helena on Horseback depicts Götene's patron saint on her journey to the consecration of Götene Church. According to local tradition, Saint Helena, also known as Elin, was one of the most influential figures in medieval Västergötland. After returning from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, she devoted herself to charitable works before being murdered near the site of today's Arla dairy. Legend tells that a holy spring emerged where she died, and the site became an important place of pilgrimage.
The sculpture was created by local sculptor Martin Hansson of Husaby in 2022. It was commissioned by Götene Lions Club with support from Sparbanken Skaraborg through the Sparbanksstiftelsen Skaraborg Foundation.
Bergets väg, Hällekis
Location: The park by the pond
Bergets vägg draws inspiration from Kinnekulle, Hällekis' industrial heritage and the close relationship between stone and water. From the eighteenth century onwards, alum production and limestone quarrying shaped the village, which later developed into an important industrial community on the shores of Lake Vänern.
Designed by Kerstin Dahl Norén in 2021, the sculpture reflects this history through its form and materials, evoking the limestone and water that have defined Hällekis for generations.
Brassica, Källby
Lundsbrunn då och nu
Rapsblomman Brassica, Källby
Location: Railway and bus station
Brassica pays tribute to Källby's agricultural heritage and its long standing connection with food production. Created in weathering steel by artist Africa Coll, the sculpture is inspired by the vibrant yellow rapeseed fields that brighten the landscape each spring. It symbolises both the fertility of the surrounding countryside and Källby's important contribution to the region's food industry.
Lundsbrunn nu och då, Lundsbrunn
Location: The park between the railway crossing and the filling station
Lundsbrunn Then and Now consists of a granite column featuring ten bronze reliefs that illustrate the town's development from the eighteenth century to the present day. Lundsbrunn became renowned as a spa destination, where visitors sought the healing properties of the iron rich waters of Odenkällan. Piper's Hospital, opened in 1817, together with Lundsbrunn Spa, played a significant role in the town's history.
The artwork offers a fascinating interpretation of Lundsbrunn's past and provides an insight into its rich cultural and natural heritage.
Together, these four sculptures form a unique public art trail where local history and contemporary art meet. Commissioned by Götene Lions Club and supported by Sparbanksstiftelsen Skaraborg, the project enriches the public realm while celebrating the stories, traditions and heritage of Götene Municipality.
