Welcome to Kållandsö

Just outside Lidköping lies the second largest island in Lake Vänern, Kållandsö. A true gem offering a variety of attractions.

Perhaps the most famous site on Kållandsö is Läckö Castle, which has stood proudly on its cliff by the edge of Vänern for since 13th century. Originally built as a fortified castle for the Bishops of Skara and it has since  then transformed over time into the magnificent Baroque castle that remains today. In the 17th century, Läckö Castle was owned by the De la Gardie family, and Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie shaped the castle into the grand appearance it still has today. Opposite the castle stands Naturum Vänerskärgården – Victoriahuset, featuring exhibitions about life in Vänern, as well as a hotel and restaurant.

Spikens Fishing Harbour

Just a stone’s throw from the castle is Spikens Fiskehamn, one of Europe’s largest freshwater fishing harbours and one of Sweden’s most important inland fishing ports. It’s a true idyll, with red boathouses filled with freshly caught fish and local handicrafts.

During a few busy weeks in October and November, Vänern’s “red gold”  Vänerlöjrom  takes centre stage as it is caught, refined, and sold here.
